Cultivating Conservation Champions

Viva! Uganda’s Gorilla Defenders campaign places a strong emphasis on education and awareness to inspire the next generation of conservation leaders. By engaging schools, universities, and community institutions, we aim to foster understanding, empathy, and active participation in wildlife protection, particularly for Uganda’s critically endangered mountain gorillas.
Schools: Planting the Seeds of Conservation
Our school programs focus on interactive learning and hands-on experiences:
- Classroom Sessions: age-appropriate lessons on gorilla ecology, human-wildlife conflict, and biodiversity conservation.
- Activities & Games: engaging students in habitat-saving simulations, storytelling, and role-playing to illustrate the challenges gorillas face.
- Follow-Up Projects: encouraging students to develop mini conservation campaigns, tree-planting initiatives, or eco-clubs.
Through these initiatives, children gain practical knowledge, compassion, and a sense of responsibility for wildlife and their local environment.

Universities: Empowering Youth Advocates
At tertiary institutions, Viva! Uganda works with students to translate awareness into action:
- Workshops: deep-dive sessions on human-gorilla conflict, conservation strategies, and ethical stewardship.
- Hands-On Engagement: participation in field trips, monitoring activities, and volunteer programs with HUGO teams.
These initiatives empower students to become conservation advocates, applying knowledge in research, outreach, and community projects.
Institutions & Community Groups: Broadening the Impact
We also collaborate with professional institutions, NGOs, and community organizations to:
- Provide tailored awareness programs highlighting the importance of gorilla conservation and sustainable practices.
- Host training sessions for staff and stakeholders to foster organizational support for conservation efforts.
- Facilitate community dialogue sessions to reduce human-wildlife conflict and promote coexistence.
Measurable Outcomes
Our education and awareness programs aim to:
- Reach thousands of students and staff across schools, universities, and institutions each year.
- Increase knowledge and understanding of gorilla conservation, biodiversity, and human-wildlife coexistence.
- Inspire active participation in local conservation initiatives, from tree planting to volunteering with HUGO teams.
- Foster a culture of environmental stewardship that continues beyond the classroom.
By educating and engaging communities, Viva! Uganda ensures that conservation becomes a shared responsibility, building a network of informed citizens, future leaders, and active wildlife defenders who contribute directly to the protection of Bwindi’s mountain gorillas.
